Spigelian hernia was named after the Belgian anatomist Adriaan van den Spieghel who first described the semilunar line in 1645. Spigelian hernia remains an exceedingly rare abdominal wall defect amongst all the abdominal wall hernias. It has a reported incidence of 0.2 to 2% in the literature.
